In addition to achieving glowing skin, skin needling can help to reduce scarring, stretch marks, blackheads, open pores, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, & more. At Bay Medical Aesthetics, we offer Dermapen skin needling in Melbourne to help restore and rejuvenate your skin.

Safe, quick, & versatile, a skin needling facial treatments or body treatment is suitable for adults of all ages and skin types, making it one of the most popular cosmetic treatments. The procedure assists by stimulating collagen production, delivering real results for skin rejuvenation. Treatments are fast, comfortable, and have the ability to target multiple areas in one session.

How Does it Work?

Dermapen skin needling is a form of collagen induction therapy where a series of needles penetrate the skin to create thousands of micro punctures. The depth of punctures can be adjusted to suit the skin concern being addressed. Superficial depths between 02. and 0.3mm are considered cosmetic needling, while medical needling has deeper penetration depths ranging from 0.5mm to 3.0mm and can only be performed by doctors and medical professionals. Deeper penetration is required for scar correction and results in better skin rejuvenation.

The micro punctures that form initiate an inflammatory cascade that recruits immune and restorative cells to work in overdrive to treat the damage induced. Circulating stem cells also jump into action and promote cellular differentiation and wound healing through the formation of new skin cells, collagen and elastin. These new cells and structural proteins help lift to the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and make scars shallower.

What Can I Expect?

Our skin needling treatment in Bayside typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area treated. While the treatment is not considered to be painful, some individuals may experience discomfort with deeper micro skin needling. If you’re concerned about pain, topical anaesthesia can be applied beforehand.

The right after care is important to support the skin while it’s healing after a skin needling session. After getting skin needling for acne scars or any other skin concern, our cosmetic doctors recommend:

  • Avoiding sun exposure for several weeks afterwards, or applying sunscreen when this isn’t possible
  • Avoiding using products that contain active ingredients
  • Keeping the treated skin free from makeup for 24 to 48 hours
  • Drinking plenty of water to hydrate the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Micro skin needling is minimally invasive with little or no downtime.

Micro needling is most often used on your face to target: acne scars, age spots (also called “sun spots”), fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, other types of scars, reduced skin elasticity, and uneven skin tone. In addition to facial concerns, Dermapen skin needling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body. Studies have found that micro skin needling was effective for stretch marks on the thighs and abdominal area when combined with fillers. Scarring on other body parts may also be treated with this procedure. However, micro skin needling is primarily used on the face.

Yes. Micro skin needling effectively helps to build the tissue within the stretch marks through the production of collagen. This builds up the indentation and reduces the colour of the stretch marks, and in some cases it can make them disappear completely.

Only certain micro skin needling devices can treat the eye contour. We use the M.Pen Pro that has six scaled and adjustable depths and increased oscillation, which enables us to effectively treat the delicate skin around the eyes. The result for the eye contour is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, along with a healthier, tighter-looking appearance.

Each treatment session takes between 30 to 60 minutes depending on the size of the area treated and if topical anaesthesia is required.

There is little to no downtime. Slight redness and warmth to the skin may be experienced after your session, and dryness can be experienced a few days post-treatment.

The number of treatments required is dependent on your skin concern and goals. Typically, 1-2 treatments will be required to improve the general appearance of the skin, while 3-6 treatments are required to correct scars, stretch marks, etc. Treatments are done at monthly intervals. Our skin expert will assess your skin during an initial consultation and recommend an optimal number of treatments.

Both treatments address concerns of loose, crepey skin, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and open pores. However, if you are looking for more targeted treatment, Fractional Laser is best for overall appearance and general redness while micro skin needling is best for darker skin tones and pigmentation or sun damage. Our skin experts will assess your skin during a complimentary consultation and recommend the best treatment that’s suited to your wants and needs.

Like all cosmetic procedures, micro skin needling isn’t without risk. The most common adverse effect is minor skin irritation immediately following the procedure. You may also see redness for a few days. If done correctly, Dermapen skin needling does not scratch the surface of the skin. Call your doctor if you notice more severe adverse effects, such as bleeding, bruising, infection or peeling. These risks are significantly reduced when the treatment is performed by skilled and experienced professionals. For medical skin needling (deeper depths), we insist on these treatments being performed by medical doctors or medically-trained professionals.

You may not be an ideal candidate for micro skin needling if you: are pregnant, have certain skin diseases such as psoriasis or eczema, have open wounds, have had radiation therapy recently, or have a history of skin scars.
